What You Need to Know About Protein Shakes

Did you know that daily protein shakes can be a vital source in helping you and your health? It’s packed full of all sorts of tasty and healthy benefits. And starting your day with a protein shake is one of the ways that you can care for yourself and your body!

Let me just start off by saying, I’m a huge fan of daily protein shakes. I drink one each morning. My kids – well, some like them and others prefer regular ice cream. Their loss, right? Because my health is worth it – and so is yours.

Not All Protein Shakes are Created Equal – So Keep Trying!

Not all protein shakes are created equal. How do I know this? Because I’ve tasted so many it’s ridiculous, my friends. Some are delicious but are lacking in “good” ingredients. Others taste horrible but are packed full of protein. While others are just right – and now I feel like Goldilocks and the Three Bears!

Some people prefer to have a protein shake for breakfast, while others spread it out a bit depending on the events that they have planned for the day. In my mind, having a protein shake mid-morning tends to give me a full feeling that then makes me feel like I’m ready to tackle anything that the day throws at me. Plus, that way I’m sticking to my intermittent fast, which has really helped my health improve.

In any case, once you find the right protein shake for you, you’ll find this to be true, too. Because really, the right ones taste amazing!

So if they don’t appeal to you, keep trying! You probably haven’t found “the one” just yet. It took me years to find mine – and now it’s my favorite treat. treat that just so happens to be packed with nutrition and gives me tons of energy!

How Can Daily Protein Shakes Help You and Your Health?

Okay, but before we talk about various recipes that work (and some that don’t), first we need to talk about the WHY these are so good for you.

The first reason I started drinking protein shakes was when I realized I wasn’t getting enough protein in my diet. Yeah – you need a lot more protein than you think! And I couldn’t handle that much meat, y’all. Physically. Could. Not. Handle. It.

So drinking a protein shake helps me get most of my protein each day without having to stress about eating all of the chicken nuggets in the house (because that’s not happening – my kids would freak out).

One big shot of protein, vitamins, minerals, and nutrition. I love it. Because then I can focus the rest of the day on enjoying my food – and helping me overcome the emotional eating that’s been the rest of my life.

But let’s back to biology and nutrition and health…

Protein shakes are great for you and your health because of the following reasons.

Daily protein shakes can be a great way to monitor and manage your weight.

If you’re on a mission to lose weight or manage your current weight, protein shakes can be a great way to supplement a quick meal while still giving you a big dose of protein. 

Protein shakes are also great as a grab and go meals when you might be running out the door or seeking something “lighter and more simple” for a meal choice for yourself. Make certain that you’re reading ingredients and giving yourself the correct dosage or protein as you don’t want to sell yourself short – or overload yourself (goodbye, regularity!).

Fueling your body with protein shakes are a great way to feel full and still give your body what it needs.

If you need added protein, protein shakes make it simple.

Many people do find that they are lacking in the amount of protein that they’re eating, but like me, don’t necessarily want to increase their meat intake or stress about matching incomplete proteins together in the right way.

Having a daily protein shake can be an amazing way to add that protein without adding in more food.

Protein shakes are great to drink after you’re done working out.

Many athletes and people who work out daily swear by drinking protein shakes right after an intense workout. Not only does it help your body prepare and store muscle, but protein shakes can also help your body heal more quickly and feel less sore. 

Now that you know the benefits of drinking a protein shake, do you know how many different kinds there are?

What Flavors of Daily Protein Shakes Are There?

Literally, so many. Here’s the thing about protein shakes. You can buy the protein powder to be flavored in vanilla, chocolate or even strawberry, and then you can even add and change them even more beyond that. 

Love peanut butter? Add some to your chocolate protein shake and just like that you’ve got yourself a Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein Shake.

Craving a banana split? No worries. Slice up a banana and strawberries. Blend it up with your vanilla protein shake with some added plain Greek yogurt. It won’t taste exactly like a banana split, but it’s dang close!

As long as you are keeping true to eating healthy, you can add other flavors and fruits to your protein shakes to change the taste outcome. This is just another amazing benefit of starting off with a daily protein shake! It’s like having a dessert and meal, all in one!

And really, being able to start every day with a milkshake is my favorite reason to drink a protein shake. Priorities, y’all.

Are All Protein Powders and Supplements Created Equal?

No, they’re not. In fact, you need to read the fine print of what’s inside the powders.

Most protein powders are safe. Some come with extra supplements, enhancements, or ingredients to “boost” your day. It’s those extras that you need to be aware of.

Why? There have been cases in the news of people drinking what they thought was a perfectly safe protein shake – and then having severe health issues (including death!) because they accidentally overdosed on the extras – specifically, caffeine.

Yes, that’s a real thing. Too much caffeine can mess with your heart – and that can kill you.

So make sure you read the fine print – and if you don’t know what’s in a protein powder? Don’t use it.

Stick to protein powders that you know where they came from – and you know exactly what’s in it. Don’t gamble your life on an unknown.

That all being said, I’ve found that my favorite protein shakes aren’t the fancy green ones full of veggies. Those are amazing and fantastic – but if I can’t drink them, then what good are they doing me?

My favorite recipes taste like milkshakes. Because then I’m getting a sweet treat, getting my nutrition, and it tastes delicious. That being said, I’ve also learned how to cut back so that my shakes are using natural sugars from fruits and I’ve cut out any extra sugars.

Because while I want to enjoy my milkshake, I also want to be able to enjoy the rest of my meals that day without stressing about how many calories I have left!
