What is the Ferber sleep training method?
The premise is that you’re helping to teach your child to self-sooth themselves to be able to go to sleep on their own. For many parents, this works but for others, it can be a harder battle than they thought.
The reason that many parents struggle with this method is that it requires letting your child “cry it out” for a period of time and try to get them to understand that they have the ability to soothe themselves back to sleep. And while this may not sound like a hardship necessarily, no child likes to hear their child crying and yelling for them for several minutes on end.
Due to the nature of this sleep training method, it’s also referred to as a “cry-it-out method” as well.
What is the appropriate age for the Ferber method?
Honestly, there isn’t an exact age but there can be a range guideline that you can try to fall within. Many people feel that around the 6-month-old mark is a good age as it will help your child realize that they have the ability to self soothe before they can start pulling up or sitting up on their own.
However, in saying that, some parents feel that close to 1 year of age is a good age because they can verbally communicate more with the child about what is going on and why the process is taking place.
How long do you comfort baby in the Ferber method?
A big part of the Ferber method is all about timing. While you are letting your child “cry-it-out”, you’re also entering the room after so many minutes and helping to sooth them without picking them up.
You’re soothing your baby – Not by picking them up, but by talking softly to them or gently rubbing their back.
Once you decide to start on the Ferber method, the times are laid out for you to abide by so you know how long you need to wait before entering the room of your crying child.
Those times start out short – and then get progressively longer as you teach your baby to self-soothe back to sleep.
Does cry it out hurt the baby?
One of the biggest reasons that people stay away from using the Ferber method for sleep training is that they’re worried that it will have lasting effects on their child.
More than likely, your child isn’t going to have any sort of psychological damage from crying themselves to sleep. BUT, if this is something that you just don’t feel comfortable with, it is important to follow your instincts as a parent.
If you feel like you’re ready to try the Ferber Sleep Method for your child, make certain that you follow the steps as outlined to do so. And while there is no guarantee that it will work, it might just be a good place for you to start and try.
